Do I Need to File?

Short Term Rental Tax FAQ (State & Local)

What is the Transient Room Tax?

The transient room tax is a lodging tax required by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and by local tourism commissions. It applies to short‑term stays of 29 days or fewer. This tax is paid by your guests, not by you. You simply collect it with each rental and send it to the Tourism Commission each month

Who must register?

Any property owner offering short‑term lodging in Trigg County must register with:

  • Cadiz–Trigg County Tourism Commission (local requirement)
  • Kentucky Department of Revenue (state requirement)

Where do I register with the State of Kentucky?

The Kentucky Department of Revenue provides registration and tax guidance for short‑term rentals.

Do I need to file if I use Airbnb, VRBO, or a management company?

If all of your rentals are processed through a third‑party management company or hosting platform and that company collects the required transient tax, those companies are responsible for reporting and paying taxes on your behalf. If you take any direct bookings, you must collect, report and pay taxes on the direct portion only. If you are unsure if your Third-party management company collects, reports and pays the taxes, you should contact them directly to ensure compliance.

When are monthly reports due?

Gross receipts for the previous month must be submitted by the 15th.

You can renew your report and pay immediately – no waiting for an invoice.

Invoices are generated on the 16th.

Payments are due by the 30th.

What if I had no rentals this month?

You must still file a zero‑activity report through the portal or by mail.

Can I report and pay by mail?

Yes. A printable form is available below for mail‑only reporting. You can download that here.
